Being a Missionary Doesn’t Mean I Have to Leave Home

I am struck by the grace that the Lord gives when He calls us to do His will. I am struck; as disobedient as I am, he bides His time until His will becomes my will.

I have been putting off the idea of moving, of leaving the world that I know for the world that I don’t know. I was afraid that missions work would send me to far away places that had no running water, no indoor plumbing and to a people that I had no heart for.

That sounds mean, that as a Christian that I wouldn’t have a heart for someone, but I have always had a hard time thinking about people that are poor, other than the people in my own backyard, in my own country.

Being a missionary doesn’t mean I have to leave home. There are missions that can be done, right here, in Canada and God is calling me loudly.  My wife and I have known for some time, and the matter keeps getting reinforced. I have tried to deflect it by saying yes; God is calling me to work with the natives, or First Nations as they are known in Canada. But what I have been saying is that I don’t know if it is in 1 year or in 5 years. God, on the other hand has another idea and I do not think that it will be a year from now, I think it will be soon.

Today for example, my wife wakes up and tells me that she feels that it will be soon. I went to church and Ron Homenuke was there telling us his testimony of missions work in the Philippines and then a dear friend came up to me after service and the first thing she said was “So, when are you going?”

God’s grace extends to a lowly man like me. I am truly excited by the prospects in my family’s future. Scary, bittersweet, insert word of choice here, but I am stepping out in faith. I am stepping out because I truly want to be swept away by the river of God.

What it will look like for us? I don’t know. I know that the way is being prepared as I write this.

As always, I covet your prayers.

Thanks for commenting. People do tend to get wrapped up in that whole “overseas” train of thought without realizing how much need is right here, at home.
