Weekly Sermon:You Will Never See Death

Original

Jesus is not above vicious opposition. His haters in John 8 not only pound him with a racial slur, but even charge him with having a demon.

But in unfathomable mercy, Jesus continues to love his enemies by telling them the truth with grace. And he extends to them this remarkable promise, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”

The mockery continues. Never tasting death? “Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?”

Jesus answers in two stages: 1) he says Abraham saw his day and rejoiced and 2) before Abraham was, Jesus says, “I am.” It is the clearest, most forthright claim in the Gospel of John that Jesus himself is Yahweh, the God of Israel, and the universe.

The very God who created and rules all things not only promises that in Jesus, though our bodies die, we never will, but Jesus also dies for us to accomplish our salvation. And in doing so, he frees us from the all-pervasive slavery of the fear of death.
